I am constantly asked to describe why nature’s natural aspirin, willow bark, doesn’t cause stomach and lower G.I. distress like conventional aspirin when both are called aspirin…you asked, we listened!
- Conventional aspirin contains salicyclic acid, known to increase gastric and duodenal ulcer risk.
- White Willow Bark, nature’s aspirin, is not an issue for either short or long-term use and is suitable with those who have already been diagnosed with an ulcer.
So you ask, “What pain medication or remedy do you personally use and recommend to your patients?”
I use two nutraceuticals that both contain white willow bark in addition to other supporting ingredients to control pain and inflammation:
Pain X is a blend of herbs and proteolytic enzymes to promote healthy inflammatory responses. It offers immediate pain relief with minimal, if any, gastrointestinal side effects. It is a broad-spectrum pain relief nutraceutical containing white willow bark (20 mg of salicin per serving), bromelain, ginger, turmeric, bioflavonoids, ginger, rosemary and boswellia. The recommended dose is 3 capsules 2-3 times daily. This formula should be taken on an empty stomach to allow for the pain-relieving properties of the enzymes. This means take it at least 45 minutes BEFORE or AFTER any food. Remember that drinks count as food unless they are water or tea with no caffeine and nothing added.
For more acute pain such as after dental work/surgery, general surgery or injury, I use White Willow Plus. This nutraceutical contains caffeine anhydrous known to enhance the overall action for modifying acute pain. Each serving of 2 capsules provides 240 mg of salicin. The salicin, a precursor to salicylic acid, works as an antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and as an analgesic. It contains a proprietary blend of turmeric and caffeine anhydrous 130 mg. Recommended dose is 2 capsules 2-3 times daily as needed for acute pain. NOTE: This is the complex I used recently for my oral surgery and subsequent periodontic laser surgery and it was highly affective post-surgery. This nutraceutical is NOT available over-the-counter and is available through the exclusive distributor of products used and recommend in my practice.
The Way I See It…Why would you continue to take chemical pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs when we KNOW they cause serious damage to our G.I. tract, including bleeding and leaky gut syndrome?
